Pierre Engvall scored the leading goal for New York Islanders. A period later, Rasmus Andersson equalized to 1–1 for Calgary, and then the regular match time was over.

It took five minutes of overtime and a penalty shootout to decide, and it was Calgary that ended the match when Canadian Justin Kirkland scored his penalty behind Islanders' Russian goalie Semyon Varlamov.

This meant 2–1 for Calgary.

Another Swede, last year's rookie and attacking star Leo Carlsson in Anaheim, decided the match against Chicago away by scoring Anaheim's third goal. When the final signal went, the score was 3–2 to Anaheim.
