The parents let their 16-year-old son get married to a girl of the same age in Serbia in 2021. Now they are being prosecuted for child marriage, after their daughter told the authorities about the wedding, writes Helsingborgs Dagblad.
The parents deny the allegations and claim that video footage of an engagement party and a wedding party posted on social media is about, among other things, a funeral celebration. However, when the police had the footage translated, it became clear that it was about a Roma wedding.
The two 16-year-olds who got married have been living with the boy's parents in Helsingborg since then and have also had a child together. The daughter, who is two years younger, has told that she was also going to be married off and has therefore been placed in a foster home.
The fact that the wedding took place in Serbia makes no difference legally, and the parents can be prosecuted according to Swedish law, writes Helsingborgs Dagblad.
