Sudan's warring parties accuse each other of murder

The paramilitary force Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan claims that over 60 civilians were killed in an air raid carried out by the country's military. The military, in turn, accuses the RSF of having killed 120 civilians over two days in the province of al-Jazira.

"Hundreds were injured in the despicable attack on the al-Farouq elementary school, where 35 refugee families were located, in the city of al-Kuma", writes RSF on Telegram. The paramilitary movement, which has been waging civil war against the country's army since April last year, claims that more than seven rockets and bombs hit the school.

The Sudanese army had stated that 120 civilians were killed by "either gunfire or food poisoning and lack of medical care".

"A paramilitary militia has carried out new massacres in the city of Hilaliya in the state of al-Jazira in recent days", the military said in a statement late on Thursday.

The two warring parties vying for power in Sudan are accused by human rights organizations of widespread violence against civilians in the civil war.

The statement from RSF is part of the movement's propaganda war. RSF has in turn been accused of gross human rights violations and indiscriminate killing.

The number of dead in the conflict has not been confirmed by independent assessors, but the death toll may exceed 20,000, according to a UN estimate in September. The number of fatalities may, however, be much higher than that, according to human rights groups. Up to ten million Sudanese are internally displaced or have left the country.
