The newly appointed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announces that his first trip in office will go to Central America and among other places, Panama. President Donald Trump has previously threatened to take possession of the Panama Canal.
Rubio's spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed on Thursday Rubio's trip to Panama, as well as to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Bruce did not comment on Trump's claims to the Panama Canal.
Many migrants also seek to make their way through the Central American countries to reach the US southern border.
We must take an interest in our neighbors – and in today's world, it really is about South and Central America – if we are to ensure that we are safe and prosperous, said Bruce.
