The figure is the lowest since the corona pandemic. Compared to 2023, 19 fewer people died last year – and the decline is most pronounced for so-called protected road users, i.e. those who travel by passenger cars, trucks, and buses.
For unprotected road users – cyclists, motorcyclists, and pedestrians – no decline is noted.
According to the Director-General of the Transport Agency, Jonas Bjelfvenstam, the development can be explained by the fact that the average speed on the country's roads has decreased. At the same time, he states that further measures are required to achieve the government's long-term goal of a zero vision.
"The relevant authorities, organizations, and companies must together continue the important work of developing various solutions and methods for safer road traffic," says Bjelfvenstam in a comment.
"We must also change our individual responsibility and behavior in traffic."
