The American aid agency, USAID, owes NRC (Norwegian Refugee Council or Norwegian Refugee Aid) 20 million dollars that have already been spent on "21 countries affected by war, disasters, and displacement."
Now, the organization is forced to lay off aid workers and terminate projects. Among the projects being terminated are support to 700 bakeries that daily provide people in Sudan "on the brink of starvation" with bread and emergency shelters for families affected by cyclones in Mozambique.
NRC is one of Europe's largest humanitarian organizations. Almost 20 percent of its funds come from the US.
The US and President Donald Trump decided earlier in February to shut down the aid agency USAID and freeze foreign aid, claiming that aid and development work is a waste.
