The massive air raids are being carried out simultaneously as the world holds its breath in anticipation of a possible ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Israel has urged people in about twenty locations in southern Beirut to evacuate, locations that the military claims are strongholds of the Iran-allied Shia militia Hezbollah.
Shortly after the warning, smoke pillars rose from impact sites.
Similar scenes unfolded in the morning, when intense gunfire was also heard from southern Beirut, reports the state-run Lebanese news agency NNA.
A Lebanese official also confirmed raids against the central parts of the city. It was unclear whether evacuation orders had been issued for these, writes the newspaper L'Orient-Le Jour.
In parallel, Israel is reported to have carried out raids against and clashed with "terrorists" in the region around the Litani River, which is considered to separate southern Lebanon from the rest of the country. Rockets, drones, launch sites, and storage facilities in the mountainous terrain are said to have been destroyed, according to Israel's military.
