More is required for equal parental leave

The distribution between women and men's use of parental leave has remained stagnant in recent years. Now, political action is required if the goals of a more equal distribution are to be achieved, notes the Swedish Social Insurance Agency in a fresh report.

Ten years ago – 2014 – women took out 78 percent of parental leave during the child's first two years. In 2021, the figure was similar – 75 percent.

The Swedish Social Insurance Agency has looked at what effects different reforms could have, for example, more reserved days or different economic incentives.

"What type of changes that could be relevant depends primarily on what political goals are to be in focus for parental insurance, and how quickly one wants to achieve the set goals. One goal can be for men to be more involved in childcare, another for women to return to the labor market more quickly", says Anna Nyman, analyst at the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, according to a press release.
