A patient with measles who was treated at Sundsvall Hospital may have infected a large number of fellow patients and staff at the hospital, reports Sundsvall Tidning.
The patient with measles was recently treated at the hospital. They had sought emergency care several times before it was established that it was measles and several may have been infected. Region Västernorrland has carried out contact tracing and informed affected patients and staff who may have been exposed to possible infection.
The affected patient is said to have contracted the infection abroad, but is now recovering, according to the newspaper.
This is the first measles case in the county in 20 years, according to Region Västernorrland. Measles is a highly infectious disease that spreads through the air from the person who is ill. The first symptoms are cough, fever, and red eyes, followed by red rash on the face and body.
Anyone who suspects measles should contact healthcare, primarily via 1177, for advice.
’’Before travelling abroad, it's a good idea to review your protection against measles and, if necessary, get vaccinated," says Maria Tempé, infectious disease doctor in Region Västernorrland, in a press release.
