The refugees have gathered in al-Fasher (El-Fasher), where around two million people who have been under siege by RSF since May are now living. Some of the war's worst battles have been fought there as the army tries to hold on to its last stronghold in the region.

RSF has been at war with Sudan's army since April 2023. Tens of thousands of people have been killed in the war and over twelve million people have been forced to flee, which the UN describes as the world's largest refugee crisis.

Both the army and RSF have been accused of indiscriminately bombing civilians and healthcare facilities, deliberately attacking residential areas, and using mass starvation as a weapon of war.
