Kristersson: "Don't have control over the wave of violence"

Many young people are caught up in the new wave of violence sweeping across Sweden. Now the government wants to expedite a law that allows wiretapping of children under 15 years old. That we do not have control over the wave of violence is quite obvious, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party).

On average, an explosion has occurred daily in January. Therefore, the government held an extraordinary meeting with the council against organized crime on Thursday.

At the press conference afterwards, Kristersson turned to all those who are worried and wonder if their door will be blown up tonight, especially in heavily affected southern Stockholm.

We share this concern, he says.

Both Kristersson and Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer (M) emphasized that the government's plan to combat crime remains unchanged.

This includes, among other things, a requirement for authorities to share more information with the police from April 1, extended opportunities for camera surveillance from May 1, and the police will have greater access to biometrics from July 1.

Speeding up

The news presented was that a law is being expedited, which allows the police to use secret coercive measures, such as wiretapping, against children under 15 years old.

It was intended to come into effect on July 1, 2026, but the goal is now October 1, 2025.

The legislative proposal presented by an inquiry in December means that secret wiretapping will be allowed against those under 15 who are suspected of serious crimes.

The inquiry also presented an alternative proposal, which means that secret wiretapping will also be allowed for preventive purposes against children who are part of organized crime. The government will also consider this proposal, according to Strömmer.

Kristersson describes the law as "completely central" to get to those who order explosions and to prevent the recruitment of children through social media.

Threatening with law

The social media platforms are developing into recruitment sites for young people - completely openly, before they switch to encrypted chats, he says.

He also issued a warning to the social media platforms.

We have repeatedly appealed for more self-censorship and self-sanitization of the platforms. If it is not done, we will implement Swedish legislation against their opportunities to use the platforms in this way, says Kristersson.

According to Strömmer, it is primarily about driving for increased requirements on platforms within the EU.

We continue to be active in the digital environment, we map, analyze, and wiretap, and we try to shut down different forms of chat forums where we know that crimes are planned, says National Police Commissioner Petra Lundh.
