According to Bett's sister, the runner had been in the hospital a week before his death. He was then discharged, but was quickly forced to be hospitalized again, after his condition had deteriorated.
He had had kidney problems. Later, the doctors understood that he had liver problems as well. They prescribed medication during his first hospital visit, but later discovered that he had both kidney and liver failure before he passed away on Sunday, says Bett's sister, Purity Kirui.
At the World Championship 2017 in London, Bett took bronze. The following year, he tested positive for erythropoietin, which can be used for performance-enhancing purposes. He was banned for four years and missed both the Olympic Games 2021 and the World Championship 2022.
He became depressed and started drinking a lot. We tried to encourage him to make a comeback after his ban had ended, but he didn't make any great efforts for it, says Kirui.
Bett himself denied having doped.
