Shigeru Ishiba becomes Prime Minister of Japan after a vote in the country's parliament.
Last week, the former Defense Minister was elected party leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Now, Ishiba will try to boost the party's opinion polls.
On Monday, Shigeru Ishiba announced that he plans to call a new election on October 27.
I believe it is important for the new government to receive the public's verdict as soon as possible, he said then.
The outgoing Prime Minister, Fumio Kishida, has held the post since October 2021. His and the party's popularity have plummeted sharply as rising prices have affected the population's economy and several corruption scandals have been linked to him.
