The gaming company Betsson was sentenced to pay back nearly six million kronor to a gambling-addicted customer. Now the appealed verdict is being taken up by the Supreme Court, writes Dagens Juridik.
Over five years, the man played for 150 million kronor and the net loss was seven million kronor. Along the way, he was rewarded with bonuses by the gaming company, which, according to the man, engaged in "aggressive marketing".
He sued the gaming company, but lost the civil lawsuit in the first instance. However, the Patent and Market Court of Appeal ruled in the man's favour and sentenced Betsson to pay back 5.8 million kronor.
According to the court, there were clear signs that the man had lost control over his gaming, something Betsson should have acted upon.
It shows that it is actually possible for players who have lost a lot of money to get their losses back. It has never happened before, said the man's legal representative Jörgen Hettne to TV4 after the verdict.
The verdict was appealed to the Supreme Court, which is now granting leave to appeal.
