Up to April 1, 412 people have been granted the scrapping premium introduced by the government in August 2024, according to the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning's statistics. This can be compared to the analysis of 10,000 more scrapped cars as a result of the introduced premium made by the Climate and Enterprise Ministry.
The interest has been, to say the least, lukewarm, admits Climate and Environment Minister Romina Pourmokhtari (L).
We do hope that this increase will make more people use this support, simply put, she says.
The proposal is included in the government's spring amending budget, which will be presented on Tuesday.
Extended Support
The support thus applies to those who scrap an older car and simultaneously purchase or lease an electric car. In addition to the support being increased to 25,000 kronor, it will also apply retroactively to those who have already received the original support of 10,000 kronor, and it will be extended to apply to the scrapping of cars with emission class Euro 5, meaning the car must be approximately ten years old or older to be eligible.
Romina Pourmokhtari dares not make any prognosis about how many more will scrap their old car and buy an electric car instead, and how much the carbon dioxide emissions will decrease as a result.
Since it's very difficult to assess how many will apply, I cannot give any such figure, she says.
Electric Car Premium on the Way
According to her, the most important climate measures consist of investing in more nuclear power, wind power, and installing more charging stations.
This (scrapping premium) will be like sprinkles on the ice cream, says Romina Pourmokhtari.
Further ahead, next year, the government has promised to return with a variant of the electric car bonus, targeted at households that may need the support to a greater extent.
We are working full-time to bring forward the regulations for the electric car premium, she says.
