This year, approximately 28,000 young people born in 2006 are called to enlistment, of which 8,000 are selected and will begin their military service in the summer of 2025. That figure is expected to increase to 10,000 by 2030 and 12,000 two years later, according to a unanimous defense committee.
However, last summer the Swedish Armed Forces stated that they do not believe the goals are realistic, and when the government presents its defense proposal next week, the target of 12,000 conscripts has been postponed to 2035, according to DN, citing several sources.
The background, according to the newspaper, is that the educational efforts cannot maintain a sufficiently high pace while maintaining quality. Furthermore, it is necessary to recruit and train enough officers who can educate the conscripts.
Defense Minister Pål Jonson (The Moderate Party) does not want to answer DN's questions about the information, instead referring to the upcoming proposal.
