German top politician: We are keeping a close eye on Sweden

The Christian Democrats – who appear to be leading the next German government – are closely examining how Sweden has revised its migration policy. This is what Dorothee Bär, Vice President of the Bavarian CSU, tells TT at the Christian Democrats' election watch.

We in CSU were recently with the entire federal parliamentary group in Sweden and talked to our colleagues there about migration policy and how it has been reformed. It's something we're keeping a close eye on.

Despite the election result looking like it will be somewhat worse than what the latest opinion polls have shown, Dorothee Bär is "very pleased".

Especially with the Bavarian result (CSU's result). And that Friedrich Merz becomes Chancellor, now we'll see with whom (we will govern) and how. It will be a long night until all votes are counted, says Bär, who previously was State Secretary to Angela Merkel with responsibility for digitalization.

Who would you most like to have in the government – the Social Democrats or the Green Party?

If we want to make progress in migration policy, it won't work with the Green Party. There, SPD is the lesser evil alternative. But it clearly depends on SPD understanding that the country needs now is a new economic policy, a new migration policy, and a new security policy. If we manage that, we can push back the extremists in the next election.
