Trump is expected to sign a presidential decree declaring a state of emergency at the border with Mexico.

To begin with, I will declare a national state of emergency at our southern border. All illegal immigration will be stopped immediately, says Trump in his inaugural speech.

We will initiate the process of sending back millions and millions of criminal foreigners.

Foreign terrorist organizations

The President further states that he will send soldiers to the border "to counter the catastrophic invasion of our country", and classify crime cartels as terrorist organizations. The White House specifically mentions the Venezuelan cartel Tren de Aragua in a press release.

According to the orders I signed today, we will also classify the cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, says Trump in the speech.

Only minutes after Trump took the presidential oath, the CBP One app, which allowed people to book meetings to seek asylum at the border, was shut down. Approximately 30,000 people had booked meetings via the app, according to AFP.

Undoing green initiatives

The new President also declares a state of emergency in the energy sector and promises to utilize the US's energy resources and drill for oil. He scraps Biden's "Green deal", investments in electric cars, and a range of other climate measures.

Trump also promises to impose tariffs on other countries, without going into details about percentages or which countries are affected. However, he establishes a new authority, the External Revenue Service, to collect the tariffs.

The American dream will soon be back, like we've never seen it, he says.

Earlier, Trump had promised high tariffs against China, Mexico, and Canada.
