Many residents have been forced to flee from sudden floods following a severe storm in northeastern Australia.

A whole meter of rain has poured down in just two days in the state of Queensland and homes, businesses, and roads are bathing in muddy water. At the same time, flood waves have caused major power outages and destroyed parts of an important bridge, according to the authorities.

Aerial images show how several rural communities are surrounded by water and cut off from the road network.

A 60-year-old woman died on Sunday when a rescue boat capsized while she was being evacuated from her home in the small town of Ingham, the police report.

The heavy rain is expected to continue over the next 24 hours and the authorities are warning of further flooding as a result.
