A 61-year-old man in Chinese Wuhan died of what was called a type of pneumonia on January 9, 2020, which Chinese authorities confirmed two days later.
The designation covid-19 came later – in the beginning of what would develop into a pandemic, the new coronavirus was described as a new, previously unknown virus.
At the same time as Chinese authorities announced the 61-year-old's death, it was reported that seven people were in critical condition, and that an additional 41 people had been infected with the new virus but were considered to be in stable condition.
Since then, over seven million people have died from covid-19, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
