Germine Joly, former leader of 400 Mawozo, one of Haiti's most feared criminal gangs, has been sentenced to 35 years' imprisonment in the USA.
He pleaded guilty in January to arms smuggling and money laundering. The latter offence is linked to a high-profile kidnapping of several North American missionaries and their families carried out in 2021 by 400 Mawozo.
Joly, who also goes by the name "Yonyon", was imprisoned for several years in Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince, but was still able to control 400 Mawozo. He was extradited to the USA in spring 2022.
