A large part of the honey sold in foreign food stores is so-called fake honey that is diluted or does not contain any genuine honey at all, according to the European Professional Beekeepers Association.
But now the fake honey can be revealed with the help of DNA tests, reports SVT.
The new technology, which will be used in several different countries, showed that 80 percent of the honey sold in German food stores was counterfeit.
Old techniques for revealing fake honey examine the sugar composition, something that does not work if the manufacturer has managed to create a sugar composition that is very similar to regular honey.
The Swedish industry organization Biodlingsföretagarna now hopes that Swedish honey can be DNA-tested at a laboratory in Estonia.
