Estonia is keeping the border crossing in Narva closed over the weekend, citing that border controls on the Russian side have suddenly started taking much longer than normal – which has led to congestion on the bridge leading to the crossing. This is reported by the Finnish news agency STT, citing Estonian media.
The measure only applies to people travelling to Russia, not the other way around.
The Estonian border authority is justifying the closure on security grounds and states that it has the capacity to close all border crossings to Russia if the situation so requires – which would make it difficult to return from Russia.
Since February, it has only been permitted to cross the border on foot.
