The decision to drop the suspicions against the man was formally received by the district court on Monday. However, the investigation into espionage is not closed, according to the prosecutor for TT.
The Security Service arrested the diplomat in an apartment in central Stockholm in May this year. He was then detained with reasonable suspicion of espionage. The diplomat is said to have later described the arrest as "a terrifying experience" and reported the police's actions, a complaint that is now being investigated separately by the special prosecution chamber.
The suspicions against the diplomat remained when he was released on foot. A few days later, he was found dead.
