Sweden's ambassador to the USA, Urban Ahlin, has a salary of over 100,000 kronor per month. Despite this, he simultaneously receives compensation from the state through the income guarantee from the parliament, writes Aftonbladet.
In 2024, this amounts to 41,000 kronor extra per month.
It is not against the rules to do so. However, several other former members of parliament, who are now also working as ambassadors, have chosen to waive the income guarantee. This includes former L-leader Jan Björklund, former S-leader Håkan Juholt, and M-member Hans Wallmark, who was recently appointed ambassador to Denmark.
Urban Ahlin is a former S-politician and sat in parliament between 1994 and 2019.
In a written comment to the newspaper, he says that he follows the existing regulations regarding income guarantees.
