A doctor at Norra Älvsborgs hospital believed that a woman's abdominal pain was due to a stomach ulcer. In reality, it was a heart attack, and the woman later died at her home. Now, the Health and Care Inspectorate (Ivo) is criticizing the doctor, reports Bohusläningen.
The 65-year-old woman was taken to the hospital by ambulance in January 2021. She was experiencing pain and discomfort in the upper part of her abdomen. According to the responsible doctor, the woman's symptoms probably stemmed from a stomach ulcer, and she was referred to the health center instead.
Four days later, the woman was found dead in her home. The autopsy revealed that she had died from a heart attack. The woman's relatives reported the incident to Ivo.
Ivo believes that the doctor failed because tests that could have detected the heart attack were not performed, which should have been done considering the patient's medical history.
