It would have been his 100th singles title in tennis. But Novak Djokovic missed the historic moment since world number one Jannik Sinner won the final in Shanghai Masters.

He was too good today. Too strong, too fast, well done, says Djokovic about Sinner at the medal ceremony.

The Italian defeated the Serb with 7–6 (7–4), 6–3.

It was a tough match. He has no weaknesses, so you have to look for the small chances he gives you, says Sinner about Djokovic.

A break in the fourth game of the second set led to Sinner being able to pull away and win the match after just over 1.5 hours of play. The title was Sinner's seventh of the year. No male tennis player has won as many titles in a season since Andy Murray's nine in 2016.

You've had an incredible year and deserved this (title), says Djokovic about Sinner's 2024.

Only two male players have previously reached the 100-title level – Jimmy Connors (109) and Roger Federer (103). Djokovic wants to become the third. That it would go his way in Shanghai was no high odds – the former world number one has won four times in the Masters tournament in China.

Before the tournament, Djokovic, now fourth in the world rankings, said that the goal of 100 titles gave him extra motivation.
