More than 45 million Thais will receive an economic stimulus package. In an attempt to boost consumption, and thereby Thailand's economy, the government has decided to distribute 10,000 baht, equivalent to approximately 3,000 Swedish kronor, to a large part of the population, reports Financial Times.
The payments have begun but will be made in stages, initially to around 14 million inhabitants who are considered particularly economically vulnerable. Many economists have, however, made the assessment that the stimulus package of a total of 14 billion dollars will not be sufficient to boost the economy.
Thailand is currently suffering from weak export figures and the fact that the tourism sector has not yet fully recovered after the pandemic.
