Sweden is increasing its support to Moldova, including in the area of defense. The countries have signed a declaration of intent for deeper defense cooperation in the shadow of Russia's full-scale invasion of Moldova's neighboring country Ukraine.
Besides the purely military cooperation, the countries will work together to combat hybrid threats and disinformation, as well as increase technology and knowledge exchange.
The security situation in Moldova has deteriorated further since the invasion of Ukraine over two years ago. Analysts have warned that Moscow would use the pro-Russian breakaway region of Transnistria to destabilize the Moldovan state.
Sweden has been driving for Moldova's closer ties to the EU to balance Russian influence in the country.
