Film director David Lynch used to smoke heavily until two years ago. He had previously been diagnosed with emphysema. In an interview with People Magazine, he tells that he started smoking at the age of eight and he loved "lighting cigarettes". They were part of his image as a filmmaker.
But now he hopes to deter others by telling them how it feels to have emphysema – like having "a plastic bag around your head". He can hardly breathe.
And even though he says he doesn't regret having smoked his whole life, he sees it as his duty to warn others: "Think about it. You can quit these things that are going to kill you", he says in the interview with People Magazine.
