The decision was preceded by a nearly three-hour long debate, which was initiated by Lise Klaveness, chairperson of the Norwegian Football Association.

We have great respect for the arguments from the supporters, but the board has never doubted, said Klaveness, according to the newspaper VG.

A majority of the elite clubs on the men's side want to abolish VAR, which was introduced in the Norwegian Eliteserien in 2023.

Clubs, players, and the audience in the arenas do not want VAR, said Lillestrøm's chairperson Morten Kokkim.

However, it was a landslide victory for the association board's proposal to retain the system – 321 yes-votes against 129 no-votes.
