Concern about drinking water at another military base

Ten thousand people in western Germany are advised not to drink tap water due to another suspected sabotage targeting a military facility.

A hole has been found in the fence surrounding a waterworks in the town of Mechernich, located just southwest of Bonn. The facility supplies water to a military base.

The local authorities announced on Thursday evening that the water may have been contaminated and that samples are being taken to investigate.

The hole in the fence was discovered by guards who were part of an enhanced surveillance around the military facility in Mechernich. Earlier in the week, an alarm was raised about suspected water sabotage at a military airbase outside Cologne, where a hole was also found in a fence. The water there later showed "unusual" values, according to the German military.

On the same day, NATO reported a suspected intrusion at a base in Geilenkirchen, also located in western Germany.
