It was when the police in Uppsala were going to control a car that the man became suspected of crime. Initially for minor drug offenses, but when he was searched, a larger amount of cash was also found in his underwear.
The preliminary investigation into suspected money laundering has indeed been dropped. But the man, who has had no taxable income since 2019, still risks losing the money, the police write on their website.
The new forfeiture law, which came into force last autumn, means that money and other assets suspected of coming from crime can be forfeited even if there are no concrete criminal suspicions.
"The new legislation gives us the power to work in a completely different way against criminal profits in the criminal environment", says Faruk Ohranovic, inspector in police region Mitt, in a comment.
