The reason is that the newspaper refused to publish a drawing that, among other things, depicts the newspaper's owner, Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos, claims Telnaes herself on Substack.
The drawing shows Bezos, together with tech moguls Mark Zuckerberg and Sam Altman, as well as Mickey Mouse, kneeling and handing over bags of money to a Donald Trump-like figure.
A swipe at how the major media owners in the USA are now trying to buy their way into the favor of the incoming president, explains Telnaes.
Swedish-born and Pulitzer-awarded Ann Telnaes, who has worked for the Washington Post since 2008, says she has never experienced anything like this before.
"I have previously received editorial feedback and had constructive conversations – and some disagreements – about certain drawings I have submitted for publication, but throughout that time, I have never had a drawing stopped because of who or what I have chosen to target with my pen. Until now", she writes.
In a statement, Washington Post's editor-in-chief David Shipley responds that he respects Telnaes' decision, "but does not agree with her interpretation of the events".
