The woman was part of a group that was forced to spend the night in a minibus during the heavy snowfall on Saturday.

They were exposed to the cold all night, no blankets, nothing, says Roland Robertson, spokesperson for the rescue forces in the Midlands region.

Unfortunately, she later died at the hospital.

Even on Sunday, many vehicles were stuck on roads, including the major road N3 between Johannesburg and Durban. They blocked the lanes, making it difficult for tow trucks and ambulances to get through.

According to the latest report, we have approximately 30 kilometers of traffic that we cannot get through, says spokesperson Thania Dhoogra to the media about a segment of N3.

Light snow is not entirely unusual during South Africa's winter, which is now approaching its end. But such quantities as fell on Friday are very rare – according to unconfirmed reports, it may have been up to two meters of precipitation in some areas.
