A patient in Örnsköldsvik was diagnosed with sciatica and arthritis. However, the pain turned out to be cancer, and the patient died, reports Örnsköldsvik's Allehanda.
The patient sought medical attention at a health centre for back and leg pain in the autumn of 2022 and was referred to a physiotherapist on three occasions.
When the pain did not subside after a few months, the patient saw a doctor who prescribed medication for the pain, which was deemed to be sciatica.
When the patient sought medical attention again in early 2023, they were unable to walk without crutches. A blood test revealed mild inflammation, and medication for arthritis was prescribed.
A few months later, the patient was bedridden. An X-ray showed mild wear and tear on one knee, and physiotherapy was recommended.
After an ambulance ride to the emergency department, widespread cancer was discovered. Two months later, the patient had died.
The incident has now been reported to IVO, the Health and Social Care Inspectorate.
