The 60-year-old had stayed in the country 25 years longer than his visa had permitted when he was arrested by police in Chiang Mai on Monday. The overstay constitutes a kind of record, according to a Thai official.

He stayed 9,135 days more than allowed in Thailand – it's a record, says the official to AFP.

The Briton had previously evaded police by claiming that his visa was about to be extended. According to the police, the man first lived for 13 years in Bangkok, where he had a child with a Thai woman. The family later moved to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand, where the man is said to have supported himself with the help of money he received from his family in the UK.

He will now be deported.
