The company Sectra has discovered a deficiency in one of its systems, which has resulted in some patients being cleared without their mammography images being fully examined.
That it is possible to do so means that there is a barrier missing. It is a security breach, says Joakim Ramos, operations manager at the breast radiology clinic in Västmanland and chairman of the national working group for breast cancer screening to Dagens Medicin.
The software was used during the period 2021 to 2024 at 30 of the country's 31 units for breast cancer screening.
It is still unclear how many women have been incorrectly cleared and whose cancer diagnosis has been delayed.
We know that such patients exist, but not how many, says Joakim Ramos.
The regions have been informed about which patients may be affected.
Most of those who may be affected have received information from their mammography unit, says Sandra Sjöåker, investigator at the Medical Products Agency, to P4 Sörmland.
