Senegal's fleet has discovered at least 30 dead people on board a boat that was drifting about seven miles off the coast of the capital city Dakar.
The destination port, as well as which harbor it sailed from, was unknown to the country's coast guard on Monday. But Senegal's military and coast guard repeatedly discover vessels heading towards European harbors with migrants on board.
Information about the drifting vessel came on Sunday evening, but it was not until Monday that the simple fishing boat – of the pirogue type – could be towed into Dakar's harbor.
It will take time to identify the dead, as advanced decay had set in, according to rescue personnel.
Migrants with Europe as their goal often travel from Senegal's coast. One of the targets is the Spanish Canary Islands; so far this year, 22,000 migrants have reached the island group.
