At least 13 people have been killed in eastern Congo-Kinshasa by an extremist militia with ties to IS. Several more have been kidnapped.
Members of the ADF militia killed civilians in the village of Mabisio in the province of North Kivu late on Friday evening, says the area's administrator, Colonel Alain Kiwewa, on state TV. The militiamen are also said to have burned and looted houses.
Eastern Congo-Kinshasa has been troubled for decades. More than 120 militias are fighting for power, land, and valuable mineral resources, while others are trying to defend their communities. Some armed groups have been accused of mass murder.
In recent years, ADF's attacks have intensified and spread to Goma, eastern Congo-Kinshasa's largest city, as well as to the neighboring province of Ituri.
Human rights groups and the UN have accused ADF of killing hundreds of people and abducting even more, including a large number of children. In August, ADF killed at least twelve people in several villages in North Kivu.
