The number of organ donors decreased last year.
According to the National Board of Health and Welfare, a total of 233 deceased persons were registered as organ donors in Sweden in 2024.
The decrease comes after a record year, when 258 deceased persons donated their organs in 2023. At the same time, the number of organ donors in Sweden has increased since statistics began to be reported in 2010 – and despite the decrease, last year's figure is the second highest so far.
The 233 deceased persons who became organ donors last year contributed to a total of 709 organ transplants.
Although the number of donors is increasing overall, there is still a great need for donated organs. Last year, 22 people died while waiting on the list. As of January 1, 2025, 684 people were waiting for an organ transplant.
