The newly discovered cases are from 2022, and the 33 previously known cases are from 2023 and 2024. In total, the hospital has now submitted a Lex Maria report to the Health and Social Care Inspectorate, IVO, which covers 45 cases.
Among them is a woman who, like the others, received an incorrect diagnosis of EIN, Endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia, which is a precursor to uterine cancer. However, her uterus was not removed.
The recommended treatment for EIN is to remove the uterus, and in many cases, the ovaries as well.
"We want to apologize to all the women affected by this. This should not be able to happen," says Johan Lugnegård, chief physician at Akademiska Hospital, in a press release.
According to the press release, measures have been taken to prevent a similar error from occurring. The routines for assessing and recommending treatment based on test results have been tightened.
"We take this issue very seriously and have wanted to get to the bottom of the scope and what caused this. It is important that we learn from our mistakes so that this does not happen again," says Lugnegård.
