The Royal Armoury, or Livrustkammaren, is in the cellar of the Royal Palace and tells Sweden’s royal history through costumes, weapons and carriages. Its displays include Karl XII’s muddy blue uniform from 1718, clothes Gustav III wore to a masquerade ball in 1792, and Streiff, the horse belonging to Gustav II Adolf. Stories of royal coronations, weddings and funerals accompany the carriages and costumes.
The museum’s own highlights include shining armour, the Little Armoury and Castle Mouse in the vaults. Its Royal Carriage Hall has been updated with new stories and objects, and an exhibition explores Sweden’s history through the monarchy. The current exhibition, In Royal Service, offers a glimpse of life at the royal court. Children can try on dresses and knight costumes in the children’s room, play, read and draw. English-language guided tours are offered on weekends. From September through December, visitors aged 19–25 pay 90 SEK on Fridays; this offer begins in 2026. Retirees and visitors aged 65 or older pay 90 SEK on Wednesdays during the same months, half the usual admission price.
