The Stockholm Transport Museum looks at how public transport has shaped life in Stockholm for more than 150 years and what it might become. Its collections include nearly 70 vehicles, 20,000 drawings, 10,000 other objects and 500,000 photographs, of which 30,000 have been digitized. The museum is in Hjorthagen, north of Östermalm.
The exhibition “The Metro, In Step with the Times” follows the Metro from the start of construction to the present. It treats the system as transport, an urban space and a cultural stage, and includes works by artists such as Jan Håfström and NUG. The exhibition is on display throughout 2026.
The museum also runs guided art tours at selected Metro stations, led by a museum educator. The next listed tour is Tuesday, 3 November, at 2 pm on the Blue Line towards Akalla. Later dates are 10 November on the Green Line towards Hagsätra, 17 November on the Green Line towards Hässelby and 24 November on the Blue Line towards Akalla. A valid SL ticket is required for the Metro journey and is not included in the tour price. Check the current programme and book a tour before going.
The easiest way to reach the museum is to take the Metro’s red line north to Ropsten.
