Author Kjell Örtoft meets Natalie Bloch at the Jewish Museum for a conversation about his book, Norrköping’s Jewish History. They trace the congregation’s development from the 18th century to today, using personal stories to discuss what the city’s Jewish heritage says about the Swedish-Jewish experience. The subject reaches beyond Norrköping: under the 1782 Judereglementet, the city became one of three in Sweden where Jews were permitted to settle. The community had its own synagogue and cemetery. The talk is suited to visitors interested in Jewish life and history in Sweden, and readers curious about how one city’s past connects to a wider national story. The museum’s event page says the talk is sold out.

Shul! – The Old Town’s synagogue

23 Oct to 31 Dec · The Jewish Museum

At Själagårdsgatan 19, where the Jewish Museum is housed, a synagogue once stood. The synagogue served as a centre of Jewish life in the city and across the country. For nearly a century, from 1795 to 1870, the Jews of Stockholm gathered here to take part in community life and to seek guidance and support from the rabbi. The people who prayed, lived, and worked here were pioneers of Jewish life in Sweden. This exhibition tells their story and the story of their Old Town shul.
