Cirkus is on Djurgården island. It was built in 1892 as a permanent venue for travelling circus troupes visiting Stockholm. The building’s original purpose was to give those visiting troupes a permanent place to perform. Today, Cirkus is an arena for concerts, musicals, stage productions and other events, so visitors come for a performance or event rather than only for circus shows.

The venue has changed since its circus beginnings. The popularity of circus shows has declined, and Cirkus has evolved into a place for several kinds of live events. The original building was designated a listed building in 1983. In 2015, a modern annex called Skandiascenen opened. The site therefore includes both the older Cirkus building and its newer annex.

A visit centres on the event you choose: a concert, musical, stage production or another event at Cirkus. The venue’s history as a permanent home for travelling circus troupes dates back to 1892, while its current programme includes a broader range of events. The building and Skandiascenen are part of that venue, whose role has shifted from circus performances to concerts and stage productions as well as other events.
