Bagarmossen’s underground subway station is on Stockholm’s Green Line 17, and Gert Marcus’s screen-printed glass plates adorn its walls. A visit offers a look at the station’s art and the history of the stop it replaced.
The former station opened in 1958 at surface level and was the terminus for Green Line 17 until 1994. That year, the subway was extended south to Skarpnäck. Bagarmossen’s old station was taken out of service to make way for the extension, and a new station was built underground. Residential buildings now stand where the former surface station was. Visit Stockholm says the former Bagarmossen stop is the first and only subway station to date to have been closed and taken out of service.
The glass plates use color in transitions that are almost seamless. Art guide Marie Andersson says the work does not represent anything particular, and that near-seamless color transitions are typical of Marcus’s work. The plates are the art in the underground station, so visitors can see them during a stop on Green Line 17.
