T-Centralen is the nexus of Stockholm’s subway system and a place to see art integrated into a station. It opened in 1957 and was the first station in the system to feature artwork. The blue-line platform, among the transport system’s recognizable places according to Visit Stockholm, opened later, in 1975, when the blue line to Hjulsta was completed.
Per Olof Ultvedt’s platform art uses blue shades and simple motifs of stylized flowers and leaf creepers. Art guide Marie Andersson says Ultvedt may have chosen the colors for their calming effect as well as their appearance. Her explanation connects the design to the station’s role as a transfer point: passengers hurry between subway lines or to commuter trains, and the artwork was intended to give them a pause and a chance to clear their minds. Visitors can look at the blue surfaces and plant forms while changing trains, or make the artwork the focus of a stop. T-Centralen can be reached by all subway trains in Stockholm.
