Kungsträdgården is on Stockholm’s Blue Line, and trains 10 and 11 serve the station. Visitors can look at its red, white and green colour scheme and the statues around the station. Visit Stockholm says the colours refer to the French formal garden that once stood above, while the statues are replicas of exterior art from Makalös Palace.
The station’s design draws on the history of Kungsträdgården park. The site was home to Makalös Palace and a French garden between 1643 and 1825. After the palace burned down, the area was used for military exercises. In 1875, the Stockholm City Council took care of the park and opened it to the public. Visit Stockholm describes Kungsträdgården as one of Stockholm’s oldest public parks.
There is also wildlife underground. Visit Stockholm says the cave-dwelling spider Lessertia dentichelis is found at this station and nowhere else in Northern Europe. In 2016, scientists discovered a previously unknown fungus on the station walls with a unique DNA structure. The station is a place to see both art connected with the site’s history and details of its underground environment.
