Hötorget is a station on Stockholm’s Green Line. It opened in 1952 as the southern terminus of the city’s second subway line, which ran northwest to the then-new suburb of Vällingby. Trains 17, 18 and 19 stop here.

The station’s square wall tiles date from its early design. Stockholm’s early underground stations opened without public art; the walls instead carried advertising. After more than a decade of debate by Sweden’s art community, art began to take a place in the subway. When T-Centralen and Gamla Stan were planned, a competition was held to choose their artwork. Over time, artworks were added to the early stations.

At Hötorget, Gun Gordillo’s neon lights were installed in the ceiling in 1998. The station’s earlier interior was largely kept: its tiles, platform signs, benches and wastebaskets remain as part of its 1950s atmosphere. Visitors can look at the ceiling lights and the preserved details while passing through the station. Take Green Line train 17, 18 or 19 to get there.
